On their long awaited debut album Ties, Irish quartet Arco Arena choose a different path, proving that energetic guitar music can still be driven by optimism without sacrificing intensity. Formed in 2015 in Dundalk, County Louth, Arco Arena have gradually established themselves as one of Ireland's most exciting live bands. The group is built around the creative partnership of Charlie Abbott on vocals and guitar, Eoghan Maguire on bass and vocals, Peter McCoy on guitar and production, and Pauric McCrum on drums. That philosophy extends beyond the lyrics into the way the album itself was created. Recording sessions were split between the spectacular surroundings of Black Mountain Studios in the Cooley Mountains, where the drums were captured, and the band's own home studios, allowing them unlimited time to experiment with arrangements and guitar tones. Peter McCoy's background as an audio engineer proved invaluable, giving the group complete creative control over much of the production process.
Visually, the album artwork reinforces its themes through an image of clasped hands created by Peter McCoy's sister, Carrie. The artwork reflects the record's belief that even the simplest human gesture can carry profound emotional significance.
Perhaps the greatest achievement of Ties lies in its refusal to separate complexity from accessibility. The rhythms may twist unexpectedly, the guitar arrangements may become intricately layered and the songs often shift direction without warning, yet memorable hooks remain at the centre of everything.
