GUSH Push Forward with Fierce New Single Constance
Few bands have built momentum as quickly as Belfast's GUSH. Following a breakthrough year in 2025 that saw the band earn support from Spotify's Alt_IE editorial playlist, BBC Radio Ulster and Foyle's Where Music Matters, RTÉ 2FM, BBC Introducing and BBC Radio's Precious Metal, alongside widespread coverage from Irish music publications including Hot Press, Golden Plec, Chordblossom, First Music Contact, Pure M Zine and Ragged Cast, the quartet return with their first release of 2026, Constance. Released as part of the Oh Yeah Music Centre's Scratch My Progress programme, the single finds GUSH building confidently on everything that has made them one of Ireland's most exciting emerging alternative acts.
Formed around vocalist and rhythm guitarist Chelsea Andrews, lead guitarist Robby McCammon, bassist Robert "Rab" Millar and drummer Darren Clarke, GUSH have steadily developed a sound that refuses to sit comfortably within a single genre. Their music draws equally from grunge, alternative rock and psychedelia, blending heavy guitar driven arrangements with emotionally charged songwriting and an unmistakable melodic instinct.
With Constance, the band push their grunge foundations even further while embracing a richer psychedelic atmosphere. Thick layers of overdriven bass, hypnotic rhythms and swirling guitar textures create an expansive backdrop that feels both raw and surprisingly sophisticated. The song carries the weight and grit of classic alternative rock while allowing moments of dreamlike tension to emerge beneath its powerful exterior.
Listeners may hear echoes of the fearless intensity of PJ Harvey combined with the hazy, psychedelic edge of Screaming Trees, yet GUSH never feel like a band simply borrowing from their influences. Instead, they reshape those inspirations into something fresh, contemporary and unmistakably their own.
Chelsea Andrews delivers one of her strongest vocal performances to date. Her voice effortlessly shifts between quiet restraint and explosive emotion, perfectly reflecting the song's central message. There is both vulnerability and defiance in her delivery, allowing every lyric to land with genuine conviction while remaining deeply melodic.
Lyrically, Constance explores the emotional exhaustion that comes from constantly placing the needs of others ahead of your own. Rather than accepting the role of perpetual peacekeeper, the song captures the moment when patience finally reaches its limit and self preservation becomes an act of liberation. It is a deeply personal statement about reclaiming identity, establishing boundaries and finding the courage to live authentically instead of carrying the emotional weight of everyone else's expectations.
That emotional honesty gives Constance much of its power. While the instrumentation surges with intensity, the message remains relatable and deeply human, transforming personal frustration into an anthem of resilience and self determination.
The production, handled by Jonny Woods, whose previous work includes Wynona Bleach, Makeshift Art Bar and Junk Drawer, captures the band's live energy without sacrificing detail or atmosphere. Every instrument occupies its own space while contributing to the dense, immersive sound that defines the track. Joel Harkin's mastering adds further depth and clarity, allowing the heavier moments to retain their impact without losing the finer textures hidden beneath the distortion.
One of the song's greatest strengths lies in the chemistry between the four musicians. Darren Clarke's drumming provides relentless momentum, Rab Millar's bass anchors the arrangement with warmth and weight, Robby McCammon's guitar work moves seamlessly between abrasive riffs and psychedelic flourishes, while Chelsea Andrews' vocals remain the emotional centre of the composition.
Following an impressive year of touring across Ireland and appearances at festivals including GazeFest, Girls With Guts Fest and Sligo Live, Constance feels like the natural next step in GUSH's evolution. The single demonstrates a band growing in confidence, broadening its musical palette while remaining firmly rooted in the honesty and intensity that first attracted attention.
With Constance, GUSH continue to establish themselves as one of the most exciting new voices in Ireland's alternative rock scene. Combining grunge, psychedelia and emotionally fearless songwriting, the band deliver a single that is both powerful and deeply affecting, confirming that their rapid rise is only just beginning.
A bold and emotionally charged release where crushing riffs, hypnotic atmospheres and fearless songwriting come together to announce the next chapter of one of Ireland's most promising alternative bands.
