GUSH - Told U So
Grunge / Alternative Rock / Indie Rock – Belfast, Northern Ireland – 2026
Sometimes, you only need a few seconds to realise that a song is going to be something special. From the very first notes of “Told U So,” the new single from Belfast alternative rock quartet GUSH, there is that immediate feeling that you have stumbled upon a genuine hit. The melody is instantly captivating, the energy is infectious, and before the song has even finished, you already know that it will be playing in your head for the rest of the day.
And that is precisely what makes this new release so exciting.
Drawing inspiration from the golden era of 1990s alternative rock, GUSH have been steadily developing a sound that combines the raw energy of grunge, the urgency of punk, the atmospheric textures of shoegaze and the melodic accessibility of indie rock. It is a familiar combination of influences, but the Belfast four-piece are increasingly finding their own identity within that musical landscape.
Their previous single, “Constance,” released in June 2026, demonstrated the band's ability to balance powerful instrumentation with strong vocal melodies and subtle psychedelic influences. With “Told U So,” that melodic instinct takes centre stage.
What immediately makes the song stand out is its sheer accessibility. There is something wonderfully natural about its hook, the kind of melody that does not need repeated listens to make an impression. It simply arrives, takes hold and refuses to disappear.
For a band drawing heavily on the more abrasive traditions of alternative rock, that ability to write something so immediately memorable is particularly valuable. GUSH understand that a great guitar song does not necessarily need to sacrifice melody for intensity, and “Told U So” is a convincing example of how those two elements can complement one another.
There is also a refreshing sense of spontaneity to the band's musical identity. Rather than sounding like another carefully calculated revival of 1990s grunge, GUSH approach their influences with the enthusiasm and directness of a young group determined to make their own mark.
The quartet have already attracted attention from BBC Radio Ulster, BBC Introducing, RTÉ 2FM, Hot Press, Golden Plec and Chordblossom, while their music has also appeared on Spotify's Alt_IE editorial playlist.
Live appearances at events including GazeFest, Girls With Guts Festival and Sligo Live, together with their participation in Belfast's Oh Yeah Music Centre's Scratch My Progress programme, have helped establish their presence within Northern Ireland's increasingly interesting alternative music scene.
But ultimately, none of those achievements matters quite as much as the music itself, and “Told U So” feels like the sort of release that could introduce GUSH to a much wider audience.
There are countless emerging alternative rock bands producing energetic, guitar-driven music, but considerably fewer manage to deliver a song with such an immediate melodic impact. That is where GUSH appear to have found something particularly promising.
For me, “Told U So” is one of those rare singles that feels like a success from the very first listen. Its melody is ridiculously catchy, its energy is impossible to ignore, and it possesses that elusive quality that makes you want to press play again the moment it ends.
If there is any justice in the increasingly crowded world of independent guitar music, this is a song that deserves to travel well beyond Belfast.
GUSH have delivered an absolute earworm with “Told U So,” and I would not be surprised to see it become one of their defining releases. A brilliant little burst of alternative rock with a melody that simply refuses to let go.
