Midsommar - Unparalleled
Dream Pop / Indie Rock / Shoegaze – Warsaw, Poland – October 28, 2026
There is something particularly captivating about bands that manage to create an atmosphere before a song has even had time to reveal its melody. Midsommar, a four-piece from Warsaw, Poland, belong to that category of artists whose music draws you into a world of hazy guitars, delicate vocals and emotions that seem to linger long after the final notes have disappeared. With Unparalleled, released on October 28, 2026, the band finally unveil their debut full-length album, marking an important new chapter in a musical journey that began in 2019.
The quartet consists of Karolina Micuła (vocals), Dawid Dziwosz (guitar), Karol Grabias (bass) and Bartek Zdunek (drums). Together, they have developed a sound that combines the atmospheric beauty of dream pop with the more intense guitar textures of shoegaze and the melodic sensibility of indie rock.
Their influences are easy to recognise, particularly the ethereal soundscapes of Slowdive, the otherworldly vocals of Cocteau Twins and the distorted guitar experiments of My Bloody Valentine. There is also a cinematic quality to their music, occasionally recalling the mysterious, melancholic atmosphere associated with Twin Peaks.
Midsommar first emerged on the Polish alternative scene in 2019, with an early performance at Warsaw's Hydrozagadka club. Their debut EP, The Dream We Had, followed in October 2021, introducing a collection of songs built around shimmering guitars, understated rhythms and Alia Fay's beautifully restrained vocal delivery.
Subsequent singles such as “Soft,” “Persephone” and “Summer's Over” helped the band establish a wider audience, attracting attention from Polish radio stations including Antyradio, Radio 357, Trójka and Czwórka. Appearances at festivals such as OFF Festival, Great September and Soundrive Festival further strengthened their presence within Poland's increasingly interesting independent music scene.
After a relatively quiet period, Midsommar returned in 2026 with a series of singles leading towards Unparalleled, a record that explores loneliness, absence, emotional vulnerability and the desire to find comfort in an uncertain world.
The first single, “Alice,” released on April 23, introduced a deeply nostalgic atmosphere. Centred on the memory of someone who is no longer present, the song explores the emotional weight of absence and the way certain people continue to occupy our thoughts long after they have disappeared from our lives.
Its combination of introspective songwriting and enveloping guitar textures reflects one of Midsommar's greatest strengths: their ability to express sadness without allowing the music to become overwhelmingly bleak.
“Dive In,” released on May 28, takes a slightly different emotional direction, exploring the desire for closeness and the vulnerability involved in allowing another person into your life. Spacious guitars and Micuła's gentle vocals create an intimate atmosphere, with the arrangement recalling the more contemplative side of Slowdive.
There is a beautiful sense of restraint in the band's approach. Rather than relying on dramatic changes or excessive distortion, Midsommar allow the melody and atmosphere to communicate much of the emotion.
The third single, “Midsommar,” released on June 19, introduces a more dreamlike dimension to their music. Inspired by nature and the uncertain boundaries between dreams and reality, the composition also draws upon the Scandinavian midsummer celebrations from which the band takes its name.
Its accompanying black-and-white video, featuring artist Kaja Janiszewska, incorporates elements of experimental cinema and butoh dance, reinforcing the band's interest in creating a visual identity that complements their music.
The three singles were recorded at Studio Wieloślad, with mixing and mastering handled by Mikhail Kurochkin, while artwork associated with the releases includes contributions from Emilia Oksentowicz.
What makes Midsommar particularly appealing is the balance they achieve between atmospheric intensity and melodic delicacy. Their guitars can create expansive, immersive textures, but the music never loses its emotional centre. Micuła's vocals are especially important in this respect, bringing a fragile, almost hypnotic quality to arrangements that might otherwise feel considerably heavier.
There is an unmistakable connection to the British dream pop and shoegaze traditions of the late 1980s and early 1990s, yet the quartet approach those influences with a sensitivity that feels personal rather than simply nostalgic.
The themes explored throughout Unparalleled also suit this musical direction perfectly. Memories, separation, uncertainty and the search for emotional connection are familiar subjects within dream pop, but Midsommar give them a particularly intimate character through their understated songwriting and carefully constructed atmospheres.
With Unparalleled, Midsommar take an important step forward, bringing together the melodic beauty of dream pop, the immersive textures of shoegaze and the emotional directness of indie rock.
The three singles that preceded its release reveal a band increasingly confident in its musical identity, capable of creating songs that are both atmospheric and deeply affecting.
For listeners who appreciate Slowdive, Cocteau Twins and the more melancholic side of contemporary shoegaze, Midsommar are certainly a band worth discovering. Unparalleled introduces a promising new chapter for this Warsaw quartet, whose music finds beauty in the fragile space between memory, longing and dreams.
