More than a decade after its original release, Against Illusions and Reality by Parks, Squares and Alleys returns in 2026 with a new vinyl edition, offering a perfect opportunity to rediscover an album that has aged remarkably well.

Created by Sergey Khavro, Parks, Squares and Alleys developed a sound built around dream pop, indie, shoegaze and lo-fi textures. On Against Illusions and Reality, shimmering guitars, soft synthesizers and understated vocals create a hazy atmosphere without ever allowing the songs themselves to disappear beneath the production.

The record often feels nostalgic, but not for one specific place or period. Instead, it explores the way memories change with time and how ordinary moments can gradually become emotionally significant. This gives the album a dreamlike quality that goes beyond its sound.

The opening title track, “Against Illusions and Reality,” immediately establishes the album’s spacious and reflective mood. The guitars are bright but distant, while the vocals remain part of the overall atmosphere rather than sitting prominently above it.

“Soft Clouds” and “Forest” continue this balance between warmth and melancholy. The music often feels light and open, yet there is always an emotional uncertainty underneath. This contrast becomes one of the album’s strongest qualities.

On “Old Times,” the connection with memory becomes more direct. Hearing the song again in 2026 gives it an additional layer of meaning, as the album itself has now become part of the past it once seemed to reflect upon.

Tracks such as “You Doubt” and “Bicycle” maintain the album’s sense of movement while preserving its dreamy atmosphere. Guitars blur into synthesizers, melodies emerge through layers of reverb, and the production remains deliberately intimate.

“I Love You” shows how effective Khavro can be when working with simple emotions. Rather than overcomplicating the song, he allows the music to provide the uncertainty and depth surrounding its direct title.

One of the album’s most important moments is “Youth,” a song that now feels particularly poignant. What once sounded like a reflection on youth has, eleven years later, become a reminder of how quickly time changes our relationship with music, places and people.

The closing “Carnival” fits naturally with the album’s themes. Like a carnival itself, the record is filled with temporary brightness, colour and movement, while always carrying the knowledge that these moments cannot last forever.

Khavro recorded, mixed and mastered the album himself, and its DIY character remains part of its charm. The production is not excessively polished, but that gives the songs greater intimacy and helps explain why the album still sounds relevant alongside more recent bedroom pop and dream pop releases.

Against Illusions and Reality remains a beautiful meeting point between shoegaze, indie pop and dream pop. Its melodies are immediate, its production is atmospheric and its emotional world is built around memory, uncertainty and the strange way the past becomes more vivid once it is gone.

The new vinyl edition is therefore more than a simple reissue. It is an opportunity to revisit a record that has quietly grown stronger with time.
