SingingGum - Every Passing Day

SingingGum - Every Passing Day

There is something particularly affecting about the way dream pop and shoegaze can transform melancholy into beauty. With Every Passing Day, released on October 16, 2026, SingingGum, the independent project from Columbus, Ohio, continues its exploration of shimmering guitars and atmospheric melodies while introducing a more personal and emotionally direct approach to songwriting.

Since The Last Hours of the Day (2020), followed by Sounds from Obscurity (2022), Cloud Cover (2023) and Daydreaming (2025), SingingGum has developed a distinctive musical identity built around delicate guitar textures, hazy soundscapes and understated melancholy. Much of the project's earlier work placed particular emphasis on instrumental atmosphere, allowing melodies and reverberation to communicate emotions without necessarily relying on words.

The five-track Every Passing Day marks a noticeable development in that approach. Vocals now occupy a more prominent position, with contributions from Makayla Rae and Katherine Christie Evans bringing an additional sense of intimacy to the arrangements. The familiar dreamlike textures remain, but the lyrics introduce more explicit reflections on loneliness, emotional insecurity, troubled relationships and the difficulty of escaping negative thoughts.

Opening track “Hollow” explores feelings of emptiness and disorientation, capturing the uncertainty of losing one's emotional bearings. “Maybe I Should Go” turns towards the complications of a relationship, examining the hesitation between remaining attached and recognising the possible need to leave.

On “Can't Get Away From This,” the focus shifts to persistent negative thoughts and the exhausting experience of feeling trapped within one's own mind. “Unlovable” explores vulnerability and self-worth, questioning the painful belief that affection may somehow remain out of reach. Closing track “Failure” brings the EP towards guilt and regret, reflecting on the tendency to define personal experiences through disappointment.

Together, these compositions form a cohesive collection in which different expressions of emotional fragility are connected by a recurring sense of isolation and introspection.

Musically, SingingGum remains faithful to the softer side of shoegaze and dream pop. Shimmering, reverberated guitars create an immersive atmosphere, while restrained arrangements favour melodic sensitivity over overwhelming distortion. The contrast between these luminous textures and the darker lyrical themes gives the songs much of their emotional character.

The increased emphasis on vocals does not diminish the project's atmospheric identity. Instead, it provides a more immediate connection with the experiences behind the music, allowing SingingGum to develop its songwriting without abandoning the qualities established across its previous releases.

With Every Passing Day, SingingGum delivers a concise and introspective EP that finds beauty within uncertainty and emotional vulnerability. Its five songs explore the quiet difficulties of everyday life through delicate melodies, ethereal voices and gently blurred guitar textures.

An understated but meaningful step forward for a project whose greatest strength remains its ability to express deeply personal emotions through the enveloping beauty of dream pop and shoegaze.
