Softcult, a Canadian music duo comprising the twins Phoenix and Mercedes Arn-Horn, has emerged as a notable grunge act infusing elements of shoegaze into their music. The duo, originally from Toronto and raised in a home-school environment by their mother, a teacher of English, has deep roots in the music scene. Before Softcult, they were part of Courage My Love, a pop-punk band active in the 2010s. However, seeking creative freedom, they left to start Softcult in 2020.
The name Softcult, as explained by Mercedes, reflects a critique of societal norms and blind conformity. Their first single, "Another Bish," was released in early 2021, followed by their debut EP, "Year of the Rat." The band's music often addresses societal issues, with their second EP, "Year of the Snake," responding to contemporary social and political themes. One track, "B.W.B.B.," was inspired by the tragic murder of Sarah Everard. Their third EP, "See You in the Dark," released in March 2023, shows influences from My Bloody Valentine and the Cocteau Twins.
Musically, Softcult spans genres like grunge, alternative rock, lo-fi, and shoegaze, and they draw inspiration from the riot grrrl movement of the 1990s, citing groups like Bikini Kill and Pussy Riot as influences. Beyond music, they engage in activism through their monthly zine, SCripture, which they started in February 2021, focusing on environmental, social, and political discourse.
