Throwing Muses, the legendary alternative rock band led by the ever-uncompromising Kristin Hersh, has unveiled their 11th studio album, Moonlight Concessions, released on March 14, 2025. This latest offering represents a striking evolution in their sound, embracing a raw, almost skeletal approach where acoustic guitars intertwine with delicate yet ominous percussive elements. Pete Harvey’s brooding cello lines snake through the arrangements, casting an eerie beauty over the album’s shadowy landscapes.
With nine tracks steeped in themes of despair, addiction, and violence, Moonlight Concessions carries an unsettling tension, reminiscent of the stark intensity of Nirvana's MTV Unplugged. Songs like South Coast unfold with the grit of a noir novel, painting dimly lit scenes of longing and loss, while Drugstore Drastic simmers with slow-burning anguish, each note hanging heavy in the air. Hersh’s voice, an instrument of its own, moves between whispers and wails, delivering lyrics that feel both deeply personal and universally haunting.
The album was crafted at Steve Rizzo’s Stable Sound Studio in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, a familiar creative space where Hersh has shaped much of her recent work. Fans and collectors can experience Moonlight Concessions in various formats, including a limited-edition cream-colored LP, a standard vinyl release, and CD.
To bring this deeply atmospheric album to the stage, Throwing Muses will embark on a European tour, kicking off in Oslo on May 12 and winding through major cities before culminating in a highly anticipated Paris show on May 31.
