Dormer. Introduces Old World, New Ghosts with the Tender Slowcore Haze of “Lie Still”
Dormer. is a Toronto-based musical project created and led by Charlie Berger. Working primarily as a solo artist, Berger has developed a quietly distinctive sound at the intersection of slowcore, shoegaze, slacker rock and deliberately stripped-back indie rock. His latest single, “Lie Still,” offers the first glimpse of Dormer.’s fourth album, Old World, New Ghosts, due for release on October 14, 2026, through Lossleader Records.
Running for three minutes and fifty seconds, “Lie Still” is currently the first song available from the album’s pre-order page. It immediately establishes the intimate language at the heart of Dormer.: slow, muted and melancholic music in which enveloping guitars, suspended notes and carefully placed silences appear to carry as much emotional weight as the melodies themselves.
Berger describes the project as slowcore with shoegaze tendencies, and “Lie Still” illustrates that balance with particular clarity. Rather than reaching for the dense, overwhelming walls of sound associated with heavier shoegaze, the track allows its textures to hover around the voice, gradually dissolving into the surrounding space. Every element feels deliberately restrained, creating the impression of a song being played quietly enough not to disturb the person lying beside it.
Lyrically, “Lie Still” takes the form of a lullaby addressed to someone unable to fall asleep. The narrator observes their small movements in the silence, their eyes remaining open as the light fades, their breathing resting against his arm and their continued resistance to sleep. The repeated invitation to remain still, close their eyes and allow themselves to drift gives the song a reassuring, almost protective tenderness.
Yet beneath this apparent tranquillity lies a deeper unease. Behind the gentle gestures and promised melodies is the awareness that the moment itself cannot last. The song’s central thought suggests that this closeness, experienced now as something ordinary and familiar, will one day become a memory marked by longing. “Lie Still” is therefore not only about sleep. It is also about the passage of time, the fragility of intimacy and our inability to recognise the full value of a moment before it has already begun to disappear.
That idea connects directly with the wider concept of Old World, New Ghosts. Berger presents the album as a collection of songs concerned with the unintended consequences of abandonment: what remains after something has been left behind, and the new presences that begin to inhabit the spaces created by absence. The title captures this tension particularly well, suggesting an old world that refuses to vanish completely and the new ghosts produced by loss, separation and memory.
The album will contain thirteen tracks, with “Lie Still” appearing in the second position between “Mirror Life” and “When You Wake.” Other announced titles include “All Perils,” “Negative Spaces,” “Passenger,” “Unheard, Unseen” and “Outline.” Even before the record can be heard in full, these names reinforce its atmosphere of absence, displacement and incomplete recollection.
As with Dormer.’s previous releases, Berger remains responsible for almost every stage of the creative process, including writing, performance, recording, production and visual design. Mastering was completed by Michael Briggs, while the cover photograph was taken by Ross Birdwise. The album will be released as Lossleader Records catalogue number LL020 and will also be available as a high-resolution 24-bit / 48 kHz digital download.
Old World, New Ghosts follows Concerning You, released in March 2024, and Concerning Me, which arrived in March 2023. Dormer.’s earlier catalogue also includes Deep End and the self-titled Dormer., both issued in 2021. Across these recordings, Berger has gradually constructed a deeply personal body of work shaped by independent production and a remarkably consistent aesthetic. In his music, slowness is not simply a question of tempo. It becomes a space for observation, allowing details, gestures and emotional afterimages to remain visible for longer than they ordinarily might.
With “Lie Still,” Dormer. avoids the spectacular eruption of the most maximal forms of shoegaze. Instead, the track favours silent proximity: a voice in a darkening room, the rhythm of another person’s breathing and the feeling that a precious moment is already transforming into memory.
As the opening preview of Old World, New Ghosts, it points towards an album that may be introspective, fragile and quietly haunted, exploring the traces that people and places continue to leave behind long after they are gone.
