The Desperate Call Of The Sea

The Desperate Call Of The Sea - Negli Anni

The Desperate Call Of The Sea

"I’m from a small town in the north of Italy next to Genoa named Chiavari.

Actually I’m the only member of TDCOTS.

This project has always existed since I started writing songs nine or ten years ago when I was around 14.

I decided to to use this name after a poem I wrote in 2017.

At that time I had a lot of songs I wanted to record but I had to make a choice and I picked up the songs that are in my first self titled album.

I recorded that bunch of songs under the influence of the band The Red house Painters. I wanted it to sound that desolate due to the fact that those songs are about the death of a close friend of mine.

After that record I continued writing songs but the English language started to feel tiny on my skin and switching to the Italian dialect was the only natural thing to do.

So in the beginning of 2022 I recorded and published the album “Mare Elefante”.

I have to say that I do everything by myself in my studio which is in my parents basement haha.

I record everything with a behringer audio interface using garageband as a DAW; for this reason everything sounds so lo-fi, but what is important to me is the diy attitude, doing all I can do whit the things I have at the moment.

For “Negli Anni” I wanted it to be a more complete album, so using the same stuff as always, I decided to make it sound more like a band.

I played all guitar, bass and vox lines directly into the audio interface.

For the drum parts I stared recording them playing a real drum which is a thing I do with my other band Autorock (that’s a band made by Niki guitars and vox, Mirko bass and me at the drums),  but I wasn’t satisfied with the sound so I opted for a fake drum that I played on a midi keyboard I borrowed from Mirko.

To be completely sincere I’m not totally alone on those records I make.

I love to ask for help when I can’t do what I’d like to do, for example in “Mare Elefante” Niki played the drums on Malaussène and another friend of mine, Devoz, Played percussion on Cassette, Altro da Dire and Mistral.

Another example of that is in “Negli Anni” where my fiancé sang some lines on the tracks Negli anni and Nebbia.

After the mixing process my cornerstone is always my cool friend Mario (bass player in the terrific Queen Lizard) that makes the final master.

For my inspiration the list would extremely long haha but to give you an idea I always listened to a lot of american music from the 90s like dinosaurs jr, pavement, smashing pumpkins just to name a few.

Also I love shoegaze and emo/screamo. In Italy we are living a revival of those genres and band like Radura, Ojne, Riviera, Gazebo Penguins, Balme Art are some of the ones I listen to the most; they are very inspirational for my songwriting even if at the end on my music emerge always the punk urge and attitude. "

Thank you, Sam, for giving me your time.
