Among Legends - Lose My Grip

Among Legends Find New Fire on Lose My Grip

Canada's punk scene has long produced bands capable of combining raw energy with genuine emotional honesty, and Among Legends continue that tradition with remarkable confidence. Formed in 2016 in the Waterloo region of Ontario, the band have spent the past decade building their reputation the old fashioned way, through relentless touring, independent releases and a deep commitment to the DIY punk community. With Lose My Grip, released on July 10, 2026, the Canadian trio deliver their strongest and most focused record yet, embracing a faster, heavier and more urgent sound without sacrificing the memorable melodies that have always defined their songwriting.

After the release of their debut album Take Good Care in 2022, recorded several years earlier and produced by Siegfried Meier, Among Legends entered a period of transition. Lineup changes gradually transformed the band from a five piece into a leaner three member outfit, allowing their music to become tighter, sharper and considerably more aggressive. That evolution is fully realised throughout Lose My Grip, an album that feels both like a natural progression and a bold new chapter.

The record features Mitchell Buchanan on vocals and bass, Sara Fellin on drums and vocals, and Tyler Boles on guitar. Following the album's completion, Bennett Rouleau joined the group as guitarist for the band's 2026 live performances, completing the current touring lineup alongside Buchanan and Fellin.

Produced, recorded, mixed and mastered by Matt Gauthier at ARC Recording Studio and This Place Needs A Name in Ontario, Lose My Grip captures the immediacy of a band performing with complete confidence. Every guitar riff cuts through the mix with purpose, the rhythm section drives relentlessly forward and the production preserves the raw intensity of the performances while maintaining impressive clarity throughout.

Released jointly by Little Rocket Records, ADD Records, Sell The Heart Records and Steady Riot Records, the album arrives as a concise burst of energy. Spanning twelve songs in just over thirty minutes, there is virtually no wasted moment. Most tracks race by in under three minutes, reflecting the band's determination to deliver maximum impact with minimal excess.

Musically, Lose My Grip builds upon the melodic punk foundations established on the band's earlier work while leaning far more heavily into skate punk and melodic hardcore influences. The songs move faster, the guitars hit harder and the rhythms carry greater urgency, yet the hooks remain as immediate as ever. There are echoes of Bad Religion, The Flatliners and the vibrant Southern Ontario punk scene that shaped the band's early years, but Among Legends have clearly developed an identity that belongs entirely to them.

One of the album's defining characteristics is its balance between aggression and melody. Even during its fastest and most abrasive moments, the songwriting never loses sight of memorable choruses and emotionally resonant lyrics. That combination gives the record both its intensity and its accessibility.

Lyrically, Lose My Grip examines what happens when stability begins to disappear, whether within ourselves, our relationships or society as a whole. Mitchell Buchanan has described the album as an exploration of different forms of losing control, questioning how individuals and entire communities have reached such uncertain times. Rather than offering easy answers, the songs encourage reflection while maintaining the hopeful spirit that has always defined the best melodic punk.

The opening single H A C K immediately establishes the album's more confrontational direction. Driven by galloping bass lines, razor sharp guitars and urgent vocal delivery, the song launches a fierce critique of unchecked greed, environmental inaction and the growing disconnect between power and responsibility. It represents one of the band's boldest political statements to date.

By contrast, Sound the Alarm channels that frustration into optimism, arguing that collective action and community remain powerful forces for positive change. It serves as a reminder that punk has always been about more than anger alone. It is equally about solidarity and hope.

Floating Here for Years explores a far more personal form of paralysis. The song captures the experience of feeling emotionally stagnant while watching life continue around you, constantly waiting for the perfect opportunity to change without ever taking the first step. Beneath its driving melodies lies one of the album's most thoughtful reflections on anxiety and self doubt.

Similarly, Go On examines emotional distance and the contradictions that often define modern relationships. It speaks to the desire for connection while simultaneously fearing vulnerability, a tension that many listeners will immediately recognise.

One of the album's emotional highlights arrives with Back Again, written by drummer Sara Fellin. Inspired by the uncertainty of the pandemic years, the song celebrates the return of live music and the unique sense of belonging found within crowded venues and the punk community. It stands as both a love letter to concerts and a reminder of how easily those shared experiences can be taken for granted.

Sara Fellin also brings remarkable honesty to Hollow, a song reflecting on periods of emotional uncertainty when it can feel impossible to relate either to those experiencing profound hardship or those celebrating life's happiest moments. The result is a moving meditation on isolation that never loses sight of resilience.

What ultimately makes Lose My Grip so compelling is its authenticity. Every song reflects years spent performing in small clubs, community spaces and independent venues where passion has always mattered more than commercial success. That DIY spirit continues to define the band's identity, giving the album an honesty that cannot be manufactured.

With Lose My Grip, Among Legends have delivered a confident and compelling second album that expands their sound while remaining completely faithful to the values that shaped them. Faster, heavier and more politically engaged than its predecessor, it demonstrates a band entering a new creative peak without losing the melodic immediacy that first made them stand out.

A powerful statement of modern melodic punk where sharp hooks, heartfelt songwriting and unwavering DIY spirit come together to transform frustration into momentum and uncertainty into purpose.
