when I saw the name "Cupid & Psyche" it made me think of Scritti Politti, because of thier album in 1985 had the same name, however that's where the similarity ends due to them having a completely different sound.
Cupid & Psyche is an indie rock duo comprised of Michael Vidal and Juan Velasquez, former members of the punk band Abe Vigoda. After a decade apart, they have reunited, finding fresh inspiration during the pandemic to create their debut album, Romantic Music. Their music embodies the interplay of shadow and light, merging various genres from the '80s and '90s into a unique and hypnotic sound.
Romantic Music consists of emotionally resonant songs resulting from cathartic jam sessions. The duo harmonizes disparate guitar parts to create tension and release, with lyrics penned after the guitar lines have been established. Vidal’s long chord progressions challenge Velasquez, who weaves his own elements through them, often resulting in an ethereal third presence in the music.
The lyrics on Romantic Music are expressions of longing for transcendence from harsh realities and the inner turmoil of the self. The songs tackle themes of feeling trapped, struggling with vices, and yearning for escape. The duo's music seeks to express the human drive towards self-improvement and freedom from negative elements of the self.
Vidal and Velasquez have been playing guitar together for two decades, having first met in 2001 in high school. Their bond over shared musical tastes and mutual understanding is evident in their music, despite the fact that their album, humorously titled Romantic Music, contains no traditional love songs. Now, their goal is to produce music that naturally emerges from their shared creativity and understanding.
