GIFT, a Brooklyn-based psych-rock ensemble, features the talents of vocalist/guitarist TJ Freda, multi-instrumentalists Jessica Gurewitz and Justin Hrabovsky, drummer Gabe Camarano, and bassist Kallan Campbell.
In a recent press release, TJ Freda delved into the creative process behind their new single, “Light Runner,” and its accompanying video. He cited Madonna's “Ray of Light” album and its iconic video directed by Jonas Åkerlund as significant influences during the recording of Illuminator. Freda described “Light Runner” as a celebration of emerging from difficult periods and the transformative power of overcoming adversity, embodying the exhilaration of personal triumph. The band’s 2023 European tour also left a profound impact on them, particularly the legacy of '90s UK bands like Primal Scream, Massive Attack, and Oasis. A memorable experience at an underground Jungle/DnB rave in Glasgow further expanded their musical horizons.
Illuminator marks GIFT's sophomore album and their first release with Captured Tracks, following their 2022 debut, Momentary Presence, under Dedstrange. The album includes the single “Wish Me Away,” which debuted in April with a music video and was recognized as one of the Songs of the Week. This was followed by “Going In Circles” and “Later,” both of which continued to receive accolades as Songs of the Week.
Reflecting on the new album, Freda shared that the band entered this project with a renewed sense of confidence. Their goal was to take bold creative risks, embrace their affinity for pop sounds, and clear the atmospheric haze of their previous work to produce something more dynamic and impactful.
