Pure Hex - Spilling

"Spilling" marks a significant shift for the band, moving away from their shoegaze roots to explore a more lively and straightforward alt-rock style. Guitarists Hussain Khan and Zach Dighans mix their characteristic reverb-drenched sounds with uplifting melodies on tracks like “Fray” and “She Comes Up.” In contrast, tracks like “Not Animal” reveal a more raw and gritty vibe. Drummer Jon Anunnziato and bassist Luke Clingerman kick off the EP with “Infinity Spin,” delivering high-energy performances that meld intense, heavy sections with the EP’s more tranquil, dream-like moments. Marta Alvarez’s vocals add a haunting, ethereal layer to the heavily distorted musical backdrop.

The band shared insights about the EP, noting that “Spilling” is the first part of a double album recorded last summer with Corey Coffman in Loveland, Colorado. They highlighted the joy of creating music together, emphasizing their collaborative writing process. Recording with Coffman involved a two-week immersive experience in Colorado, allowing them to fully dive into production and songwriting.

The full project, "Spilling/Five of Tears," explores the themes of growth and loss, inspired by the tarot card ‘Five of Cups.’ This card represents an emotional low point that can lead to significant self-discovery. The band explains that this card illustrates the challenges and setbacks that can reveal a deeper, enduring connection within oneself. Their message is clear and powerful: even in times of loss, one retains their inner strength.

Eager to share the first installment of their new work, the band describes "Spilling" as the dawn of the album, capturing its brighter, more optimistic start.
