Waves of Dread - A Bad Dream in a Raging Sea

Newcastle's Waves of Dread is set to make waves in the music scene with their debut album, "A Bad Dream in A Raging Sea". Their journey to this point has been tumultuous, and the album title might give a hint. But as the release approaches, it's clear that the band views this project as a source of catharsis and healing.

In a recent chat with Nick, the band's lead singer and songwriter, he revealed how crafting this album has been like therapy for him. “The lockdowns had bound us together in ways we never imagined. Creating this album after being isolated was a relief for us,” he mentioned. Delving deeper into the album's content, Nick opened up about the various life events that inspired it, including the loss of his and his sister Steph's mother, relationship woes, and ongoing struggles with mental health. Songs such as "Cold", "Forevermore", and "Motion" carry a depth that can only be truly appreciated when one understands the backstory.

Steph, not just Nick's sister but also the band's co-vocalist, guitarist, and keyboardist, has her own unique place in the musical landscape. Alongside her work in Waves of Dread, she performs solo under the moniker Steff Mundi. The band’s ensemble also boasts of seasoned musicians like Bob on the guitar, Steven transitioning from bass to drums, Lucas on drums, and the newer addition of Binho, handling bass and keys. Not to mention special features from Charlotte of Marginal Gains and James Leonard Hewitson, who have lent their exceptional skills on violin and trumpet respectively for the album's stirring opener, "Moon Shows/Sun Shows".

Recorded at Harbourmaster Production Studios under the expert guidance of Martin Trollope, the album is a testament to the band's dedication and passion. Nick has nothing but praises for Martin, saying, “Martin's touch was invaluable. It felt right working with someone who truly gets our sound.”

Describing Waves of Dread's music is a challenge. It encompasses melodic guitar tones, relaxed yet powerful drumming, and intermittent fuzzy vocals. While many may label some tracks, such as "Twilight" and "Oyster", as 'shoegazing', Nick feels that's a simplistic view. Their music offers a spectrum of emotions, from melancholy to exhilaration. “We never aimed for a gloomy record. Our goal has always been to transform negatives into positives,” Nick asserts. Given the resurgence in popularity of 'shoegaze' music, Waves of Dread's unique take on the genre is bound to resonate with listeners.
