Conn Thornton has quickly established themself as one of the most vital voices in the Irish music scene. With roots as a classical pianist steeped in Russian Romanticism and French Impressionism, Thornton transformed their early training into a unique contemporary language during the stillness of 2020. Fusing classical nuance with the atmospheric depth of Talk Talk and the emotional scope of Sufjan Stevens, they found a new mode of expression — one that has since powered several singles and three full-length albums, most recently Meteorite Season (2024).
Their new three-track EP, When Bethesda Lands They’ll Throw Us a Parade, continues that evolution, weaving dream pop textures, electronic experimentation, and indie sensibility into a sound that feels both intimate and cinematic. Each of the three songs is inspired by different aspects of cinema, using film as a lens through which to explore questions of identity. The music moves fluidly from shimmering synth washes to intricate melodic phrasing, always carrying Thornton’s unmistakable voice at its core.
The title itself comes from the epilogue of Angels in America, a monologue Thornton describes as “a celebration of identity, and especially of queerness.” In a climate where queer existence is too often questioned or threatened, this EP stands as a quiet but radical affirmation: of presence, of resilience, of the joy in simply existing.
When Bethesda Lands They’ll Throw Us a Parade is more than a release — it’s a statement of artistic courage, bringing together Thornton’s classical foundation and contemporary vision to craft music that is deeply personal, politically resonant, and sonically captivating.
